Cozumel Gets its
First Wreck Dive
Felipe Xicotecatl C- 53

The " Felipe Xicotecatl " or C- 53 a
de-commissioned Mexican Navy Ship was sunk on June 6, 2000 in the National Marine Park.
The ship is located between Chankanaab and Tormentos Reefs on the sand flats between the
two reefs.
The C- 53 settled on the bottom upright, the bow
faces south and the stern northward. The deepest part of the wreck is 78 feet at the
propellers, around 54 feet on the main deck, and the top reaching to within 26 feet of the
surface. The Felipe Xicotecatl is about 168 feet long and weights in at around 600 metric
tons.
The wreck was set-up for divers to penetrate the
hull and cabins with lines attached to the floors for directions. Be careful of the
cut-outs they can be quite sharp.
